CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: “DJ” Djinn Dupree
Age: 28
World Information:
The world that DJ exists in is not so different from modern America, circa early 2010’s. Technology, society, and the political stature of things remain more or less the same, with few exceptions.
Beneath the normal, every-day exterior, there is an under-layer of this society. In this world supernatural entities – spirits, blood-suckers, demons, fae, extra-dimensional beings, etc. all kinds of creatures of legend and myth – mingle and exist. They do bleed into the existing world, but subtly so. As with many predators, they are skilled in avoiding the notice of their prey: humans.
Few humans are able to see or interact with these creatures, those who can either have some distant blood relation, or are under the influence of certain drugs that allow them to see beyond the veil. Drugs are a more common method, as long as you know the right person. Honestly, they’re hard to find, and easy to die using, but to those who thwart creatures of the night it’s the only option.
Having some sort of magical ancestry is extremely uncommon, as most ‘first-generation’ hybrids don’t make it into adulthood. Often, the supernatural ancestry overwhelms their human vessel, and they meet an untimely end. And even if they don’t, they’re just as likely to be hurt by the very human societies they are a part of. Humans fear and attempt to control what they cannot understand, and children who demonstrate strange and often dangerous abilities cannot be abided.
But on occasion, they find a way to survive.
Character Information:
DJ is a young man from this world’s New Jersey. He was raised by his single mother, Sugar, and lived with her and his younger half-sister Cori until he turned twenty.
DJ was the result of a one night fling between Sugar, legal name Mary Dupree, and a young business man who only ever gave the name Lucien. At first, DJ seemed like a relatively normal child, but then his demonic blood started manifesting and troubles began for him and his mother.
At the age of eight, DJ began having nightmares. At first they appeared normal for his age: he described to his mother horned monsters with wicked claws and glowing eyes. When he began drawing these entities at the age of nine, she put him in therapy. The therapist reported he appeared to have some form of mild schizophrenia and high levels of anxiety for his age.
When he was ten, he accidentally set his bed on fire during a particularly bad nightmare, when he spontaneously combusted. The act did not kill him, but it did scare his mother as she struggled to put out the fire, but he emerged unharmed from the singed mattress and melted sheets. Realizing something else was at work, she contacted an old friend of hers who owned a head-shop in town: Saul. Luckily he happened to be just one of the types who sold illegal substances in the city and occasionally dealt with the creatures beyond humanity.
After several days of research into the occult, he determined that DJ was the son of the devil. One of several, as they almost always died at an early age and the devil is the type to hedge his bets. Something tied to a bloodline is irreversible, and so they had to troubleshoot a way to deal with it and keep DJ’s rapidly developing demonic powers from hurting himself or someone else.
The result was an intricate sigil, originally just painted on every day as a youngster and eventually tattooed on his sternum when he turned 16. It didn’t prevent the changes, but slowed and controlled them enough that he could plan and train around them. Saul continued to run his shop, but moved considerably closer to assist with DJ’s issues.
Saul ended up in a brief, but loving relationship with his mother, which resulted in DJ’s sister Cori being brought into the world. One of his mother’s favorite memories to recall is that when Cori was born, DJ, recently turned eleven, took one look at the little blanket-wrapped baby and said “I’m your brother, I’m here to protect you.”
Come hell or high-water though, Sugar insisted on her son continuing his education as far as he could. The balance between schooling and what he called ‘after-school club’ was difficult for him to maintain, and the physical changes weren’t stopping. He grew, taller and larger than most people would anticipate considering his mother’s diminutive stature. Every few months to a year he would develop a fever, and during those times would wake up with some new change: pointed ears, claw-like nails, a particularly hard stomach flu gave him a split tongue.
These changes as well as his struggling academics labelled him a delinquent among his peers. He would regularly be drug tested, have his locker checked by security, and was spoken down to by teachers.
Where most kids would cower, DJ puffed up and pushed back. He slept in class, shot spitballs, and threw toilet paper on teacher’s cars. He regularly toed the line, just enough to keep himself from being expelled, but it was obvious he wasn’t happy in school.
As a result of social pressure and failing grades, DJ didn’t graduate high school, and instead dropped out his junior year to start working and supporting his mother and new baby half-sister. It had been a difficult discussion with his mother, but she accepted that as long as he was making the decision for himself, she would support him.
He originally worked several odd jobs, but his appearance again intimidated and turned many people away from him. Despite his struggle, he insisted on staying positive. When life continued to pull the rug out from under him, he would just get up, dust off, and try again.
Only one notable time has DJ ever encountered another supernatural being. When he turned eighteen a demon appeared on the doorstep, demanding council. According to them, his birthright was to be completed, as one of the few living children of the devil, he was to take his place in hell among the devil’s right hand.
They were lucky enough to have plenty of holy water and silver knives in the kitchen. While Sugar kept the creature temporarily distracted by arguing with them, DJ grabbed a weapon and threw them both through the apartment's weak plaster into the kitchen. It was brutal and over astonishingly quickly. Though it left DJ in the emergency room from injuries and a huge mess to clean up, he never hesitated to dispatch such an obvious threat.
Out of concern for the remaining safety of his family, and interested in independence, he got a steady couple of jobs. Mornings he worked in a mechanics shop, at night working as a bouncer for a gentleman’s club. It certainly paid to have a guy on staff who could throw a fully grown man across a room with one hand. In the two spaces he was finally able to flourish and make friends. The chip on his shoulder finally softened as he was able to connect and laugh with other people.
Though working both jobs didn’t do much to improve his hard headed personality or crass sense of humor, he made good friends with the desk boy at the mechanic, nicknamed Twitch.
Twitch is a nervous, loner type of person that at first DJ would poke at to entertain himself. The two didn’t have exactly an antagonistic relationship, but under his quiet exterior Twitch also had a bit of a bite to his bark. His sarcastic and rude responses to DJ’s physical jabs and teasing floated back and forth often when they worked together.
Eventually the two developed something more like a friendship when DJ came roaring to Twitch’s defense in an argument against a particularly angry customer at the shop. The woman insisted that her appointment had to be booked sooner than the time available, because of her busy schedule. Twitch, trying to explain his hands were tied, was surprised when a hulking silhouette filled the doorway and said “If your oil-change is so fucking important, you can do it yourself. Book it or get out.”
When Twitch can’t get someone to back down by himself, he quickly learned DJ was someone he could count on, and when DJ needed to be removed from a situation or told to let something go, Twitch could pull him back. Another example was when DJ was accused of stealing another mechanic’s tools, which he had not. The two large personalities nearly came to blows, the manager threatening that whoever threw the first punch was fired. Surprisingly, it was Twitch who broke it up, standing between the two and in a cracking voice told DJ to “back the hell up before he got himself fired.” More surprisingly, DJ listened.
Twitch was the one who pushed DJ to save and buy his own motorcycle, lovingly named Sally. He convinced him that it was alright to do something for himself, and spending a bit of extra money on something he wanted wouldn’t be taking something else away from his mother and sister.
It was around that time he finally moved out of the tiny three room apartment. But he still sends home money whenever he can to continue to support his family.
Personality:
Initially, Saul helped DJ to get his magical blood under control, but he realized that DJ was struggling with something far deeper than that. He then restructured their teaching sessions into half-therapy, where he would listen to DJ’s problems and try his best to give the advice he could. Saul himself was a less-than-savory individual, and had his own flawed view of the world, one he unintentionally taught to DJ, and what led to the falling out he eventually had with Sugar.
Because of Saul’s teachings, DJ’s response to naysayers turned from quiet acceptance to lashing out. If he was going to be thought of as a muscle-brained troublemaker: he was going to be the biggest, loudest, dumbest one you’d ever seen. When he was in the last few years of high school he would regularly land himself in detention for his antics. Eventually he started joking that the specific seat he always took in detention: second row, third in from the right, “may as well have his name engraved on it.”
This brand of rebellion continued into adulthood, where he eventually stopped trying to pass himself off as “quiet but normal.” He grew out and dyed his hair, covered his arms in tattoos, embraced his more natural outspoken personality, and never looked back.
As a result of his half-intentional intimidating physique, DJ is very rarely afraid in a social setting. He knows very well he’s by no means invincible (holy water hurts him just like any demon and he bleeds like any human) but he also knows he can handle himself in a fight. Because of that, he states his opinions loud and clear in the company of others, and isn’t willing to be shooed back into complacency. When confronted, DJ is far more likely to double down than back off.
This has also gotten him into trouble often. In the cases that his appearance wasn’t enough to turn him away from certain service jobs, his argumentative personality usually did the trick. Several of his dismissals were based on ‘attitude’ given to upper management. When accused of making a mistake, he tends to speak his feelings loud and clear, and isn’t willing to, in his words, “fake playing nice.” When asked to present his case, he doesn’t bother speaking too carefully or censoring himself. His harsh language and general attitude put off many potential friends and employers alike.
Most people give up arguing with him instead of engaging, and Twitch even nicknamed him ‘Pit-bull.’ The breed of dog is (falsely) rumored to have locking jaws, and DJ can be the same once he sinks his teeth into something. Even to his own financial or physical detriment. He doesn’t give up a point unless someone he loves yanks the lead. However if those people he loves are around, he’s significantly more docile and calm tempered.
“I’m loyal if you feed me.”Despite his loud and sometimes brutish personality, DJ’s favorite people in the world are his mother and sister. His mom is where he gets the majority of his stubbornness so he knows better than to try and get the last word in with her. She will “run his ass up and down the block” when she knows he’s wrong, and that’s no exaggeration. Among the handful of people DJ cares about, only his mom and sister Cori are the ones he will back down from when argued with. He might give them a sarcastic comment or poke fun, but he doesn’t get angry or even push.
For example, the first time DJ asked to drop out of school was after his sophomore year. His mother said she didn’t like the idea, but if he could make the case enough to convince her she would allow it. Instead of getting heated or arguing, DJ took a step back. He thought about the path his life was taking, his grades, and what made him happy. He took almost an entire year to think about it, and then made his case halfway through his Junior semester. Knowing he would forget it if she pushed, his mother listened to his entire piece, and then said that it sounded like he was doing it for himself, so she would allow it.
DJ is the kind of person who doesn’t do things in half measures. If he’s committed to an idea, it’s going to be followed through with everything he’s got. His commitment to his family is no exception. DJ would do anything to protect the people he loves, including stabbing a demon to death with a consecrated knife on his 18th birthday because they might hurt his mom or sister.
DJ views himself as an unlucky person, and that no matter what he does, he’s going to have a mark on his back and blood on his hands. But he never uses that as an excuse to withdraw from the people he loves. Instead, the same hands that can lay a man flat with a haymaker can wipe away Cori’s tears when she skins a knee.
He’s a balancing act between anger and kind-heartedness that sometimes still gets him hurt. But he would rather die loving his mother and sister than live without them. He takes hits both physical and mental, gets fired from jobs, and is regularly told he’s a worthless idiot. Part of him even accepts it all as true, and he won’t ever try to deny it about himself. But no matter what knocks him flat, he keeps getting up because he has a family to take care of. He would dye his hands with the blood of a thousand demons if it meant that theirs would stay clean.

Personality:
“I was born to be a fuckin’ outcast.”
DJ is, at his heart, a very extroverted young man. He often jokes about his own circumstances, no matter how serious or dire. Throughout his life, he was told over and over he would never amount to anything, and would only burden those around him. That was where Saul came in. Saul was one of the first positive male figures in DJ’s life, and was the first person to teach him to accept who he was and that he wasn’t going to please everyone.Initially, Saul helped DJ to get his magical blood under control, but he realized that DJ was struggling with something far deeper than that. He then restructured their teaching sessions into half-therapy, where he would listen to DJ’s problems and try his best to give the advice he could. “You don’t like it? Hit the door.”
DJ is not always an easy person to get along with, despite how much he actually likes people. After a life of being judged and turned on, it takes a special kind of stubborn to not be cowed by the opinions of a crowd. He often jokes about his own suffering and that of others. If he doesn’t take it seriously, it can’t hurt him. Most people give up arguing with him instead of engaging, and Twitch even nicknamed him ‘Pit-bull.’ The breed of dog is (falsely) rumored to have locking jaws, and DJ can be the same once he sinks his teeth into something.
